Egypt Egypt' s Spring Break
I had planned a nice post to narrate the exploits of Grace struggling with the holiday Egyptian queen of shops selling trinkets and around the desert by camel. Then yesterday came the news of the terrorist attacks in Dahab, and I passed the desire. We returned from three days to a land where there are only rocks, sand and poverty, but where tourism is growing at the edge of that wonderful sea manages to make so many families live better.
We were in Marsa Alam, a lot more 'to the south of Dahab. In a place built with great taste and in just 6 months of 2000 workers. Ants as fast as those who built the pyramids thousands of years ago. Labour picked up among young gi Aswan, many of whom are currently employed them 'and similar places. The average salary of a worker is 12 € per month. A guy who works the front desk, in a situation of extreme privilege only for being in a clean, air conditioned and neatly dressed, he told us that comes to about € 40 per month. With one quarter of the Egyptian pound, equivalent to 4 euro cents, a family can buy 5 loaves. When the two leave the euro as a tip you have solved a week.
Hassan, the boy who served us tea 'in the tent under the stars, he greeted us smiling because he went home to find his wife and child born to 20 days, which can eat and have a house because he prepares you 'to tourists, a six-hour drive from his home.
bombs in Dahab, Sharm El Sheik as those of last year, may result in serious crisis in this system. Where we went we were almost all Italians and Germans. A holiday in Dahab were mainly Egyptians. Is to say that we should not let fear win, that in Egypt you have to go anyway, because hotels and villages everything is checked (yesterday's bombs were put in a market in the center of a country) and why on the roads Large-capacity is a checkpoint every 500 meters. But if the massacre of Dahab had happened a few days before our departure, I wonder if we would be leaving. For the moment there is only silence and prayer for those who was on vacation yesterday and now suddenly is among the thousands of stars in that sky. Salaam Alaykum.
